What is a decal layer?

While decal layers are still supported, they’re not necessary and functionality is subject to change in the future.A decal layer is an optional special type of TGA file can be used to accompany a custom paint file. Because they allow for transparency, decal layers can be useful to display an additional, second layer of decals on a car, separate from your primary paint.
You don’t need to use a decal layer, and most custom paints don’t use them.
Decal layers must be uploaded as 32-bit TGAs with an alpha layer mask hiding the parts of the decal layer you don’t want to cover on your primary paint.
Your decal layer also needs to match the dimensions of your primary paint (2048Ă—2048 in most cases, though 1024Ă—1024 is also allowed).
Do I need to use a decal layer for my custom paint?
No, it’s not necessary to use a decal layer. As of iRacing 2019 Season 2, any custom paint can modify stamped decals that iRacing hasn’t deemed mandatory.
Can I add a spec map to a decal layer?
No, iRacing does not support spec maps for decal layer TGAs, only for the base car paint.
