How do I create a spec map file for use in iRacing?
Spec map (or specular map) MIP files can be created using the iRacing sim. Spec maps originate as TGA files you paint. The iRacing sim converts spec map TGAs to shareable MIP files.
Note: replace the number 187715 below with your own iRacing Customer ID number.
To convert a TGA file to a MIP file using iRacing:
Save your 1024x1024 or 2048x2048 TGA file as car_spec_187715.tga.
Place car_spec_187715.tga in your Documents\iRacing\paint\whatever-vehicle folder.
Launch the iRacing sim and drive your car onto the track.
You should see the finish of your car change in iRacing as per the spec map TGA data.
A new file named car_spec_187715.mip should appear in the folder.
If desired, make changes to the car_spec_187715.tga file in your paint folder. You can press Ctrl + R to re-generate the MIP file; there's no need to restart iRacing.
The final car_spec_187715.mip file can be uploaded to Trading Paints via My Paints (your personal paint) or the Showroom (a public shared paint).
